Historiographic or literary works related to the Matter of Troy in Spain in the Middle Ages have been thoroughly studied. Troy is the theme of all kinds of translations associated to the basic Latin sources: "Ephemeris belli Troiani by Dictys" (4th c.) and "De excidio troiae historia" by Dares Phrygius (5th or 6th c.), the "Roman de Troie" (1160-1170), or even, later on the "Historia destructionis Troiae" by Guido delle Colonne (ca. 1290). Its first manifestations, dated from the beginning of the 13th century, and marked by their fragmentary character, are episodes about Troy inserted in extensive compilations that cover wider thematics. According to the preserved manuscripts, this type of reception carries on along the 13th century. The first autonomous works that are exclusively dedicated to the theme of Troy date from the middle of the 14th century, ca. 1350, in an period when the integral, faithful reception of works like the Roman de Troie or Guido’s Historia blossoms. This article presents a synthetic panorama of the main works written in Spain, where the Matter of Troy appears or is the main theme. To keep the article short, it is centred on the 13th and the 14th centuries and texts in Castilian, even though a few works in other Iberian languages (Navarrian, Aragonese, Catalan, Galician) are cited.
