All Swiss jurisdictions are required to ensure the high quality and accessibility of the Swiss Education Area and to coordinate their efforts and deepen their level of cooperation. Monitoring of the Swiss education system is an important means of fulfilling this mandate. It involves the systematic collecting and analysing of long-term information which in turn supports evidence-based education policy formation. The precursor to this report was published in 2006 in the form of a pilot report and the findings were subsequently used to shape the education monitoring process. This present report constitutes the first education report proper and assesses the education system on the basis of the three criteria of effectiveness, efficiency and equity. The report contains individual chapters on the education levels and types, making it easier to draw comparisons between them. The second report, published in 2014, covers the period 2010-2014.
