Attention, Memory and executive functions are the basis for all daily activities and are necessary for the child to adapt to and cope with the environment. Attention has to do with being alert, obtaining an overview of one’s surroundings and focusing on what is important and relevant to the situation. Experiences are processed and stored; they can be recognized or recalled, or otherwise influence children’s thoughts and actions. Attention is about directing awareness toward what is relevant – like a spotlight – and to confine or expand the attention depending on the activity and the objective. When playing football, a broad attention is functional, while focused attention is more appropriate when solving math problems. The development of attention proceeds through several phases that reflect the different functions of attention. The child’s attention focus is also important for the infant’s interaction with adults.
