The interest expressed by earlier researchers in the construction of sequences of San rock art has been re-kindled in recent years. Most of these studies employ a technique only recently applied to rock art - the Harris Matrix (Chippindale & Tacon 1993). The latest of these Harris Matrix studies of San rock art is that by Swart (2004) at two sites in the Drakensberg, Eland Cave and Ngwangwane 8. The value of her results, however, is called into question by serious methodological faults in her use of the technique. These faults arise because she does not take into account fundamental differences between ground deposits (the original context of the Harris Matrix technique) and rock art. This is a key issue.
