In 1997, the author published the article “A field for history: the animal” in which he raised the issue of the historic use of sociological and anthropological works. He has since witnessed changes in this field of social sciences and new approaches being developed. Here, he presents his observations of these changes and on their contribution to his discipline, by offering new modes of interpretation and by introducing hitherto unpublished informations to which access in the archives is difficult. He also suggests a direction of research in historic works for both human and social sciences and what could be achieved together with other disciplines such as ecology and ethology, by taking reflection on the animal as actor still further.
