The literature and practice in social innovation seems to have a rather peculiar relationship with planning theory and practice. Whereas social innovation is becoming prevalent in European policy discourses, its roots can be found in the works spearheaded by the European Spatial Development Planning Network more than 20 years ago. In order to make the importance of social innovation for spatial planning theory and practice more explicit, three major contributions can be defined. Social innovation approaches strengthen the institutional understanding of spatial planning, the transdisciplinary background of social innovation research and its focus on collective problematization supports social justice as the subject of planning and the multi-actor approach of social innovation research reconceptualizes planning as a transformative practice not confined to a professional field. In the conclusive section, main characteristics of spatial development analysis and planning are introduced, as a way of constructing a framework for a socially innovative planning approach.
