Relying on the results of a sociolinguistic analysis of the actual functional status of the Yakut language in bilingual communicative space and using the data of previous surveys, the author shows that urbanization processes, promoting the growth of titular population in the capital of the republic, contribute to raising the functional status of the Yakut language basically in non-regulated spheres of the social and cultural system. The persistently high functional status of the Russian language and certain extra-linguistic factors determine the less frequent usage of the Yakut language against the background of the official bilingualism.
