In recent years, executive functioning has received considerable attention from researchers, and this entry provides reasons for this interest. The entry gives an outline of what is meant by the term executive functioning , discusses its importance, and describes its assessment and development until adolescence. Then there is a discussion of the way in which, with increasing age, different components of executive functioning are easier to identify. Following this, the relationships between executive functioning and important life outcomes or experiences are considered; these are findings that point to the developmental significance of this process. The entry ends with a consideration of executive functioning in children with impaired language.
