In this chapter individual coaching is seen as a systemic intervention to deliver benefit for all the people, systems and organizations that the individual engages with. The 3Cs model is demonstrated: Context, Client and Coach, with “The Work” to be done lying at its heart. The latest research is examined to draw out what makes for effective contracting and to provide guidance from coaches as to their emerging best practice for success with the authors adding further thoughts. It can be argued that contracting begins from the first contact, not the first session, and there is consideration of what can happen when we fail to contract effectively, with illustrations from practice. There is a detailed outline of the phases of contracting including an introduction to the IDDD model (Inquiry, Dialogue, Discover and Design) and how the organization, the individual and supervision fit in; there are also potential systemic questions for each phase. There are times when sponsors, leaders and/or HR will not or cannot be directly involved in multi-stakeholder contracting and there are suggested approaches for engaging the stakeholders’ voices ion the coaching, should that occur. The concluding chapter case study explores some of the challenges referred to.
