The construct of working memory capacity has been invoked to explain and measure individual differences in reading skill. In this paper we present some research which challenges this position. First, we summarise the current position on working memory and reading, highlighting the important questions raised in the initial work. Then we describe how our attempts to find answers to these questions have impelled us to rethink the usefulness of a general working memory construct, both from the standpoint of the theory and more particularly the measurement of individual differences in reading comprehension.
