In this chapter, Dylan van der Schyff describes a recent move from Enlightenment aesthetics and a “technological enframing” of music education towards an increased focus on collaboration and musical activity construed as positive social interaction. van der Schyff explains various ancient Greek understandings of knowledge and ways of being, travelling through phusis, poiesis , and ekstasis before lighting on phronesis , which describes a caring disposition. This connects with orexis – how humans reach out to the world and to nature to make meaning. The author argues that music learning, conceived as socially oriented musical praxes, is essential to humanity.
