It then identifies eight of the most common misconceptions of smart growth and counters them with conceived facts. Provided are examples of projects and policies that have worked. The aim of the book is to focus public debate on challenges facing communities and approaches for solving them. The eight myths identified and challenged are that smart growth: is a code word for no growth; is anti suburb; creates another layer of government regulations to slow development; does not sell; will eliminate the need for new roads; equals growth boundaries; is bad for business; and, with so much undeveloped land, there is limited value in open space preservation.
