Abstract There are several chapters in this book which address theory of mind and the brain. There are other chapters which deal in depth with other topics we touch on here, especially the distinctions between behaviour which presupposes theory of mind and superficially similar behaviour which does not. Finally, elsewhere in this volume there are extensive discussions about the terms ‘theory of mind’, ‘mentalising’ and ‘mind-blindness’. We have decided to include some observations on these topics which are highly relevant to the design and interpretation of neuroimaging studies. We believe that such studies would be uninterpretable or misleading without being set in the context of the broader research questions.
