Around the beginning of the twentieth century, urban planning grew as a profession to address the poor conditions of the industrializing cities of the nineteenth century by focusing on technical, aesthetic, and political processes to guide such things as the orderly use of land and the provision of infrastructure, for example, streets, water, and sewer. By the late twentieth century, urban planning goals expanded to include social equity, sustainable development, and livability as the ideal outcomes of all urban planning processes. Urban planning and human dynamics (UPHD) is an emerging transdisciplinary, multiscalar research field focusing on dynamic patterns in human communication and exchanges influencing settlement and behavior patterns. Central to this understanding, is the study of “urban access” – an individual's technology enhanced capacity to discover, navigate, and participate in the exchange and management of goods and services in urban environments, central to the sharing economy phenomenon emerging at the dawn of the twenty‐first century.
