Classical sociologists are inclined to leave emotions out of the analysis of the activities of ordinary members of society, either by reducing them to private mental states which are inaccessible and devoid of sociological relevance, or by seeing them as ordinary evaluations whose mistaken and deficient character must be shown. The author proposes an alternative, non-mentalist, view of a tourist’s ordinary fears as a public, observable and commonly understood phenomenon. Those fears are explained as a complex product of cultural procedures of categorisation. In the examined contexts, identification categories « stranger », « tourist », « habitué » underlie to a great extent knowledge or lack of knowledge attributions about the place which is made « visible » through the felt emotions.
