In the eighteenth century, Western societies had experienced a profound revolution in their way of life. The development of natural science brought about the upsurge of a growing technique that made the industrial revolution possible, transforming the previous natural world into another human-made and artificial one. Applied psychology has commonly been considered merely a translation or a simple transfer of principles and concepts from theory to concrete issues based on the demands of society. Three key areas attracted the interest of many psychologists dedicated to the study of the human mind. They focused on some typical situations where adaptation was not easy: a child's adaptation to school, a worker's adaptation to job requirements, and a person's adaptation to the requirements of normal life in a social world. This chapter examines the peculiarities of applied psychology in the three main lines of growth: clinical, educational, and industrial psychology.
