The internet and its aggregation of vast amounts of digital information have altered the ways individuals learn about and obtain relief from acute and chronic health conditions. This chapter discusses the evidence for the many health-related uses of the internet (e.g., education and peer support), and the use cases when considering therapeutic interventions with individuals presenting with behavioral problems. The authors describe practical issues for clinicians when recommending the internet during clinical encounters: Methods to assess the accuracy of online content, factors that influence the effectiveness of internet-based interventions, issues concerning patient-generated data and security, and potential barriers to internet access. The chapter concludes with an overview of future directions (Web 3.0).
