Casual creative environments (CCEs) are part of cities’ innovation ecosystems. They offer new spaces for creatives and knowledge workers to pursue their entrepreneurial and innovative endeavours; hence, they offer an alternative to conventional knowledge and innovation spaces (e.g., universities or research and development centres). Our study investigates CCEs in the Brisbane local government area (in Australia) as a case study, exploring its diversity, social context, pre-commercial and commercial purposes. We analyse Brisbane’s innovation ecosystem by the emergence of CCEs over time and their geographical distribution, and map relations between and among nodes in terms of purposes, spatial configurations and business entity types. We find regularly emerging CCEs from the beginning of the new millennium, dense concentrations of CCEs in the inner city, and high numbers of privately owned CCEs. The implications for the future of creative work are discussed.
