Abstract

To imagine is to make present to my mind’s eye what is absent. As I write, enervated by summer diesel smog and distracted by the noise of drilling from across the road, imagining the city may seem, on the face of it, a perverse and redundant activity. The city is hardly not there. Why do I need to imagine it?
