An important part of any forensic case investigation is to identify, detect, locate, and analyze the trace evidence. Microscopy is a nanoscale technology that is capable of generating forensically important information. This tool is widely used for almost any type of investigation in forensic science. The aim of this article is to briefly discuss about the role of microscopy for forensic investigations and about the different types of microscopes including light, electron, and probe microscopes and their potential forensic applications such as age examinations of bloodspots, fingerprints, analysis of gunshot, and other related forensic cases. There are numerous light microscopes that could be used for various kinds of forensic investigations. Some of the commonly used light microscopes in forensic fields are compound microscope, polarizing light microscope, and stereomicroscope. Also, a number of electron microscopes including SEM and TEM as well as probe microscope such AFM are commonly used for forensic investigations. Light microscopes use photons for image development, while electron microscopes utilize electrons for this purpose. SEM and TEM along with other analytical instruments such as FT-IR are the most commonly used tools for forensic analysis to date.
