This chapter introduces specific problems that arise in communication and learning and discusses the identification of disorder in the context of normal development. The classification and diagnosis of communication disorders, including Speech Sound Disorder and Language Disorder, and specific learning disorders with impairments in reading, written expression, and mathematics are examined. An examination of key concepts, issues and research is provided and the epidemiology, developmental course, and etiology of the various disorders is discussed and enriched by case material, tables, and illustrations. Current knowledge regarding the assessment, treatment, and prevention of communication and learning disorders is presented. In addition, the evolution of the role of special education services for youth with communication and learning disabilities is highlighted.
