Structuralism vs. functionalism: These are two of the earliest psychological schools of thought. We discuss the origins and evolution of these two ways of thinking about psychology including, for example, how William James’s functionalism eventually morphed into the modern field of evolutionary psychology. Psychoanalysis vs. the cognitive revolution: Freud was wrong about a lot of things, but modern research in social, clinical and cognitive psychology shows that he was right about a few things, including the tremendous importance of the unconscious – better understood today as John Kihlstrom’s “cognitive unconscious.” Behaviorism vs. humanism: These two very different perspectives on psychology have left their impact on modern psychological topics as diverse as psychotherapy, self-concept formation, motivation, and well-being. How can they be integrated? Behavioral neuroscience: The growing field of behavioural neuroscience and the emergence of neuroimaging techniques such as fMRI and electroencephalography (EEG) have radically altered our understanding of the neural basis of human thought, feeling, and behaviour. We’ll discuss topics such as how we know social pain is real, how brand names affect pleasure, and how to know if a patient in a coma is “brain dead” or is likely to emerge from the coma.
