This chapter explores the religious and cosmological dimensions surrounding the making of woven textiles in the Sirwa, southern Morocco. It addresses changes in weaving rituals and beliefs. In addition to participant observation, semi-structured interviews with weavers about their weaving ritual practices were conducted between 2002 and 2005. As will be further elaborated throughout this chapter, the unpredictability of life and divinities may have provided Sirwa communities with cognitive categories to explain technical uncertainty and problems. All the rituals and proscriptions prior to and during weaving highlight the idea that the life course of astta should be, like the human one, continuous and uninterrupted. The chapter looks at the way astta and the ram-victim are treated during their 'lifetime' before the ultimate sacrifice, they both enter the domestic and feminine space and share the family life during the period of time when they grow to completion.
