The Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory (MMPI) is a widely used psychological test that aids clinicians in assessing personality traits, detecting and diagnosing psychopathology, and selecting appropriate treatment methods. Multiple forms of the MMPI (MMPI-2, MMPI-2-RF, and the MMPI-A) have been adapted from the original version for use with various populations (i.e. adolescents, adults, ethnic groups) in a variety of settings (i.e. personnel screening, correctional facilities, inpatient mental health settings). Early administration and interpretation of the MMPI relied on paper and pencil; however, with technological advances the various current versions of the MMPI are readily accessible and easily administered and interpreted. Additionally, the MMPI is often used in legal proceedings to determine an individual's competence to stand trial or as evidence during the trial. Recent research and development has focused on the use of the MMPI-2-RF and the Police Candidate Interpretive Report (PCIR) as tools in law enforcement candidate screening and hiring.
