This volume focuses in one way or another on languages whose grammatical systems show some degree of hybridity. In the next three parts of this chapter, the authors introduce the different sections of the Handbook and explain our motivations for what has been included and how the people see the contents linking to other research. The final section groups nine chapters together under the heading of 'Framing'. The people understanding of 'framing' encompasses not only the different ways in which they can situate the study of pidgin and creole languages in linguistics, but also how the people can situate their study in the broadest possible context of the humanities and social sciences. As the people widen their scope, an important methodological issue is the need to view creole languages from a typological perspective, something which they believe underpins any linguistics of impact, and Velupillai's chapter shows precisely what this would look like.
