The history of science, a well-established discipline of scholarly research, has existed for many years. Knowing and understanding psychology’s history, specifically, are important for several reasons and we contend that these reasons are applicable to knowing the history of industrial and organizational (I-O) psychology. Most historical accounts of the early years of I-O psychology describe various aspects of the discipline’s evolution by identifying and recognizing individuals and events whereas other historical treatments include contextual influences in the history. The first edition of this text is viewed as one of the first comprehensive historical overviews to include individual contributors, significant developments and influences on those developments. To begin this second edition, this chapter presents a discussion of the precursors of an applied psychology for business and industry primarily in the United States followed by a brief historical overview to set the stage for the remaining chapters.
