The concept of second generation migrants is controversial. This chapter focuses on adolescents of Sahelian descent growing up in France. This encompasses youth who can trace their descent from the Senegal River valley and other regions and towns in Mali, Mauritania and Senegal as well as from Niger, Burkina Faso, Guinea and Cote d'Ivoire. The sociology of immigration has constructed its object of study as a separate world without questioning, or only belatedly and hesitantly questioning, migrants' experience of discrimination and segregation. School reinforces young people's awareness of difference. The influence of the school on the ideological and cultural development of youth is enormous. French schools promote the majority culture, integrating other cultures to the point of eradicating difference.
