The fall of the government of the German Democratic Republic as well as its social and political system created a great shock among the people living in East Germany. The marriage rate declined as did the fertility rate and the number of divorces also decreased, which are all indicative of a state in shock of sudden change in its political and social environment. During the transition period in East Germany, there was a notable increase in the mortality rate of young adult males while the other gender-age groups remained constant. This change in the mortality rate of young adult males may have been caused by untrue and falsified data from the past regime of the East Germany: to state otherwise, mortality rate in East Germany in the pre-transition period was underreported and the current report is grounded upon more transparent data under the reunified German government.
