INTRODUCTION In this chapter, we discuss the concept of ‘community arts’ and its relevance to mental health and education. Community arts in mental health is distinguished by the premise that people who engage with community-based arts programmes are participants in the creative process. Community arts is also known, therefore, as ‘participatory arts’. More recently, this type of approach has been widely associated with the ‘arts and health’ agenda. This agenda is led by the Arts Council England and the Department of Health (DoH) and has gained great momentum in recent years.1,2 Subsequently, we pay special attention to the mental health benefi ts of the arts and health within this agenda.
