Chapter 4 examines the relation of ageism and generational status to key dimensions of the academic playing field including intergenerational classroom challenges, pedagogical models, student views of faculty, and departmental conflict as well as differences in disciplinary, curricular, and research approaches. It describes the significant external pressures that have influenced the culture and practices of the academic department including the increased corporatization and research expectations of the university. It further elucidates conflicts that can arise within the academic department based on differing generational expectations with respect to curricula and resources. The chapter also explores differing generational perspectives on diversity and work/life integration. It concludes with a multigenerational case vignette that illustrates reverse mentoring.
