Preface 1) The motive and purpose of this study This study is originally aimed to understand the important mission of the tourist guides in Korea`s travel industry, on the one hand, and explore the ways to better improve their working conditions, on the other, thus contributing to attracting more foreign visitors as well as to the sound growth of this paying trade. 2) The object and method of this study Making an object of this study a total of 464 tourist guides working for the 25 international travel agencies across the country as of the end of August, 1978, I have divided these 25 travel agencies into two groups: 10 upper-class travel agencies and 11 lower-class travel agencies based on the number of foreign touristy each agency attracted in 1977, and also classified them into two groups; 10 upper-class travel agencies and 11 lower-class travel agencies based on the number of tourist guides each agency employed, and finally selected 3 travel agencies from the 10 upper-class travel agencies and 6 from the 11 lower-class travel agencies based on the number of foreign visitors each travel agency drew and the number of tourist grades each travel agency employed during the corresponding period, thereby making a sample survey on the 174 tourist guides working for these 9 travel agencies, using questionnaire. In addition to this questionnaire, I have even made a personal interview with the management of these travel agencies and some of the tourist guides in a hope to obtain reference materials. I have received 114 replies from 174 questionaries, a 65. 5 percent of the total. Conclusion From the above study f have found that most of travel agencies in Korea are paltry in their scale of business, and that the income of these tourist guides is too low, as compared with their working loads, which has turned up as a problem. Another problem is that there is no tourist guide of special foreign language. Therefore I would like to suggest the following two problems: 1) Introduction of a pool system for tourist guides and approval of a joint office system. 2) The compulsory employment system for the tourist guides of special foreign language and need for financial aid to these small-scale travel agencies.
