Innovative Design of Pleated Cheongsam for Aging Women

Abstract

“Bronze Embroidery” is a series of design by Yi Zhe, a Shanghainese designer brand founded by Xu Xubing, that combines Chinese traditional cheongsam tailoring with Western wrinkling technology, aiming to meet the physiological, psychological, spiritual and cultural needs of middle-aged and older women. The name of this series indicates the combination of bronze color and an embroidered textural effect of the shrunken pleats. The design features of the traditional cheongsam that suit a slim body may not necessarily suit the changing bodies of middle-aged and older women. Therefore, while maintaining the cheongsam’s cultural form, the series of “Bronze Embroidery” modifies the traditional cheongsam, such as materials, surface design, and structure, and demonstrates the key significance of design innovation based on market feedback.
