EnglishIn the last four decades, the archeological studies on rock art that have been carried out in the northeast region of Brazil show the existence of common characteristics among the graphic representations in the different rock art provinces defined in the region. This fact indicates the existence of processes of diffusion of ideas associated with the dispersion of human groups. This article presents the research that is being carried out on the origin of rock painting traditions in northeastern Brazil. The epicenter of the Nordeste tradition would be located in the Serra da Capivara region, while that of the Agreste tradition would be located in the western half of the state of Pernambuco. This paper proposes as a research hypothesis that the Sao Francisco River should have acted as a cultural diffusion axis, with its round-trip dispersion routes.
