Extensive analysis of the Hawkey literature certainly confirms the need for a coherent pedagogy for museum learning and not just online. Whatever approach to museum learning is adopted as the century advances the distinction between formal and informal learning is also becoming a false dichotomy it is unlikely to depend upon existing paradigms neither of traditional museum design nor of conventional e-learning. One of the principal advantages of digital technologies lies in the degree of choice and control that is given to the learner. Digital archives remove the distinction between temporary and permanent. Personalization of interpretation will significantly enhance social and intellectual inclusion. Personalization of technology will free both museums and learners from many of the current constraints. Personalization of learning will finally facilitate an escape from the deficit models so prevalent in educational institutions and release untold potential. And the key to personalization lies with the sensitive use of digital technologies by museum educators.
