Literature related to the active participation of persons with disabilities in religious organizations is reviewed, as is literature dealing with clergy involvement with disabled persons and their families. A sum- mary of a study conducted of clergy perceptions of accommodations available to individuals with disabilities and their families is presented. Primary emphasis is on participation of and adaptations for persons with cognitive disabilities. Results indicate clergy are aware of only low numbers of persons with disabilities in their congregations and are not highly active in providing accommodations or services to parents and families of these individuals. The findings suggest a need for additional information for clergy and the encouragement of greater effort as well as commitment in meeting the spiritual needs of persons with disabilities.
