We introduce a method to assess whether a technology fits into one of three integrative concepts, analogous to those applied to academic research, namely mono-, multi- or inter-disciplinarity. This is achieved by identifying the main International Patent Classification codes allocated to a given technology, here referred to as a collection of patents, and by measuring the interconnections of those patents through citation network analysis. We have tested the potential applicability of the procedure with three case studies: ”Computer-generated animation” technology, “Regenerative Medicine” technology, and “Computerized Tomography”. The scientific contribution of our work is to provide a methodological framework and corresponding indicators for decision-makers and historians of technology to assess how interdisciplinary a technology is at a certain interval of time.
