Forensic neuropsychology is the application of neuropsychology to civil and criminal legal proceedings. At times, neuropsychological deficits have a direct bearing on legal issues-for example, establishment of damages in a personal injury case. At other times, a person may have impaired neuropsychological test scores, but the impairment alone does not provide the complete answer to the legal issue. Hence, an older person may have dementia, but still possess compe tency to execute a valid will; a person facing criminal charges may have neuro psychological impairment but be found competent to stand trial.
