Cidadania e trabalhadores: cocheiros e carroceiros no Rio de Janeiro (1870-1906)

Abstract

The object of this thesis is the transport workers mobilization and organization forms in Rio de Janeiro, between 1870 and 1906. In this time period, the streetcar companies have changed substantially the transport sector. Those companies had also an impact in the work relations. Investigating the specific category of the streetcars workers, I intend to analyze the role of workers in the process of citizenship fomation in Brazil. Thus, I present some aspects of the exercise and the struggles for the enlargement of rights, like: the petitions to the municipal and central government; the associations, both mutual and unions; besides some of the category strikes, and it's remarkable that they made more strikes than any other workers in this time frame.
