The Canadian Centre for Justice Statistics (CCJS) is best known for its annual surveys and Juristat publication summaries of police reported crime, adult criminal and youth courts, federal and provincial adult and youth corrections. Federal control of the criminal law ensures some uniformity in its application, but the actual day-to-day activities of justice agencies can be variable from city to city or province to province. The CCJS conducts a number of annual surveys and compiles reports that give key statistics to governments, the public, and researchers. These include: uniform crime reporting survey, homicide survey, police administration survey, integrated criminal court survey, corrections key indicator reports for adult and youth, and Canadian correctional services survey. The CCJS has worked to integrate databases and develop microdata files on victims and offenders, for example trying to advance a more complete knowledge on victim characteristics and crime careers.
