Since 1970 the previous tide of Puerto Rican in-migration has subsided and immigration of other Hispanics has increased. These newer non Puerto Rican immigrants although classified as Hispanics come from a variety of cultural and socioeconomic backgrounds. Using the 1980 Census and the Public Use Microdata Samples this research provides a comprehensive study of the demographic and socioeconomic characteristics of Puerto Ricans and other Hispanics those non Puerto Rican immigrants exclusive of Cubans and Mexicans in New York City. The results show wide differences in the socioeconomic status of the groups closely related to basic disparities in fertility labor force participation and most of all family structure and composition. An examination of the 2 largest other Hispanic subgroups Colombians and Dominicans revealed differences which were in many instances wider than those between Puerto Ricans and all other Hispanics. Tables and charts are provided on: total number of persons of Hispanic origin or descent in New York City in 1980 classified by origin; total families by type and presence of own children; persons in households by type of relationship and persons in group quarters; children ever born for females by age and marital status; years of school completed for persons 25 years and over by sex; language spoken at home and ability to speak English by age; household income in 1979; family income in 1979 by family type; labor force status by sex; labor force participation ratios by sex and age; and household income in 1979 by income type.
