This paper, from the 2004 conference proceedings of the Institution of Professional Engineers New Zealand (IPENZ) Transportation Group, considers trip time reliability benefits. Trip time reliability describes how much the travel time for a particular trip may vary from day to day. This variability is usually dependent on the levels of congestion on the route, with more variable trip times typically experienced on those routes with high levels of congestion. The author considers the variables that may play into the measurement of trip time reliability, including all-day congested corridors, spare capacity in intersections, the introduction of one-way systems or coordinated traffic signals, the use of town by-pass routes, and the inability of microsimulation models to calculate trip reliability. The author concludes that the solution to congested urban networks may lie in examining network developments that tackle trip reliability rather than network travel times.
