This study aims at investigating literary aspects of the Zulu folktale and \nestablishing whether such aspects have had any influence on the Zulu novel. \nFor the purposes of this investigation, this study is divided into seven \nchapters. \nChapter l is an introductory chapter. Plot is the subject of the second \nchapter. Here an attempt is made to show that certain motifemes which are \npopular in Zulu folktales are also manifested in Zulu novels. Chapter 3 \ndeals with milieu. The remaining chapters deal with characterisation, theme \nand style. On the whole, the folktale influence on characterisation has an \nadvers~ effect on the novel. Theme, however, appears to have a positive \neffect. Certain stylistic devices such as songs have penetrated the Zulu \nnovel from the folktale and they lend to it its unique quality. \nIn the concluding chapter, opinions by various critics on the Zulu novel \nare assessed and general observations on the findings of this study are \nsummarised.
