Since its early emergence as a politi' cal movement over three hundred years ago, feminism has been involved in re-visioning the future. Contemporary feminism' ' is really an umbrella concept, an elliptical way of speaking about a variety of competing and alternative feminisms. Despite important differences among us, all feminists agree that sexism (or, the oppression of women) exists, is wrong, and must be changed. A minimal condition conception of feminism which captures the claims on which all feminists agree, then, is that feminism is the movement to end sexist oppression. Over the last decade, feminists in academia have begun to explore ways of ending sexist oppression in the mainstream curriculum. The focus of this paper is twofold: to reveal the nature and to demonstrate the desirability of the feminist challenge to the mainstream or, perhaps more appropriately, malestream curriculum. I argue that, if taken seriously, the feminist challenge to the mainstream curriculum re-visions and rewrites the future in ways that promise or threaten, depending on how one looks at it, the mainstream curriculum in fundamental, and not merely incidental or tangential, ways.
