The premise is that without the new toys of technological innovation the success of modes other than the private car depend very much on the spatial distribution of households and economic activity (land use) and the design and positioning of buildings and roads (urban form). Which is, of course, where transit orientated development comes into its own. This paper attempts to estimate the potential for walking, cycling and public transport given the present trends, as a starting point for transit oriented development. It asks what is the potential in Perth for more walk, cycle and public transport trips for shorter distance trips? Is there a reasonable sized market out there of shorter distance trips presently undertaken by car that these minor modes might compete for?
