Abstract

Should books that deal with tough, gritty social and political issues be elementary classrooms? This article presents criteria to distinguish multi-view social issues books from other types of children's literature, illustrates the various debates surrounding these books, describes the opportunities these books afford young readers, and makes a case for the importance of using multi-view social issues books in elementary classrooms.
