The economic impact of retirement tourism in Montserrat: some provisional evidence

Abstract

During the postwar era, Montserrat has undergone a major eco nomic restructuring away from agricultural staples toward export manufacturing, tourism', and related construction. This transfor mation was sparked by the discovery of the Emerald Isle by North American tourists in the early 1960s and the subsequent gestation of a real estate boom based initially on retirement home construction financed largely by off-island investors. Although the resulting mainly expatriate retirement community has provided Montserrat with a distinctive low-density tourism style, as yet there has been no systematic analysis of the economic impact of these resident visitors in the overall picture.
