BIRTH: BUILDING AN INTERACTIVE RESEARCH AND DELIVERY NETWORK FOR TELEVISION HERITAGE

Abstract

Abstract (EN) BIRTH is a three-year EU funded project within the MEDIA plus programme that waslaunched January 2003. It unites the following partners: BBC (GB), Joanneum Research Graz(A), Sound and Vision (NL), Noterik Multimedia (NL), ORF (A), RTBF (B) and HagenbergUniversity of Applied Science (A)The main goal is to set up a web portal for the exchange of digitised audiovisual material. Theproject focuses on the early days of television in Europe. Video content will be stored onstreaming servers in the various participating countries following a decentralised architecture.The content provided is not limited to moving images of early television programs, inaddition it also includes digitised schedules, stills, statistical figures and much more. Zusammenfassung (DE) BIRTH ist ein dreijahriges EU-Projekt im Rahmen des MEDIA plus Programms und lauft seitJanner 2003. Folgende Partner bilden das Projektkonsortium: BBC (British BroadcastingCorporation, GB), Joanneum Research Graz (A), Sound and Vision (NL), Noterik Multimedia(NL), ORF (Osterreichischer Rundfunk, A) und RTBF (Radio-Television Belge de laCommunaute Francaise, B).Hauptziel des Projektes ist die Errichtung eines Webportals zum Austausch von digitalisiertemaudiovisuellem Material. Inhaltlich konzentriert man sich dabei auf die Fruhgeschichte desFernsehens in Europa. Der Videocontent wird dezentral auf verschiedenen Servern der beteiligtenPartner gespeichert und ist uber ein gemeinsames Interface zuganglich. Das audiovisuelle Angebotumfasst neben den Videofiles von fruhen TV Programmen, auch Fotos, digitalisierteProgrammablaufe, Statistiken u. v. a. Der vorliegende Artikel umreist die Grundidee hinterBIRTH, das erwartete Ergebnis des Projekts, die Strategie des multilingualen Zugangs beimProjekt und beschreibt das so genannte „Contribution Tool“, welches den Metadatenimportsteuert.
