This chapter deals with the relationship between the residents of two volunteer tourism host communities and the volunteer tourists who visit them. One is a declining rural community (McDowell County) in West Virginia, USA. The other is a rapidly expanding urban area (Tijuana) in Baja California, Mexico. The chapter focuses on two emergent themes surrounding the relationship between volunteers and the "voluntoured": the issues related to dependency and the role of organized religion.
