This study examined the relationship between religious orientation and mental health on a religiously diverse sample of 211 college students. Allport's Religious Orientation Scale was used to categorize subjects as intrinsic, extrinsic, proreligious or nonreli-gious. Results indicated that intrinsically religious and proreligious students reported greater existential well-being than extrinsic or non-religious students. Extrinsically religious students were more depressed than intrinsics and lower in self-esteem than all other groups. Implications for counseling are discussed.
