Since the early 1990s, Canada has become a primarydestination for individuals who make refugee claims on thebasis of sexual orientation persecution. Based on interviewswith lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) identifiedrefugee claimants, social workers and refugee lawyers inToronto, I argue that LGBT refugees and those who workwith them are enmeshed in a system predicated upon highlymalleable, historically and socio-politically specific sexual termsand identities that privilege particular gendered, classed andraced interests and, thus, place LGBT refugees from nonNorth American societies in a particularly vulnerable position.
